Static & Silence

The hat was supposed to fix everything. It was this vintage trucker cap Jayden found at a thrift store—the kind that looked effortless on TikTok but somehow just made him feel like a poser. He adjusted the brim in his reflection, trying to channel the chill confidence of the seniors who breezed through hallways like they owned them.

"You good, man?" Marcus asked, falling into step beside him. "You've been adjusting that thing all morning."

"Yeah, just—break it in, you know?" Jayden lied.

His first house party was tonight, and the weight in his chest felt less like excitement and more like he'd swallowed stones. The hat stayed on through lunch, through chemistry notes he couldn't focus on, through the final bell that usually meant freedom but tonight meant the gauntlet.

Then he saw her.

Maya was by the sphinx—that weird bronze statue in the courtyard that everyone called "the Sphinx" because some art student installed it last year as a "commentary on secrets." She was taking photos of it for the school Instagram, and lightning struck inside Jayden's chest—not real weather, but that electric snap of recognition that made his hands go cold.

The hat suddenly felt ridiculous.

"Hey," she called, spotting him. "You know anything about this thing? I'm doing a 'campus mysteries' post."

Jayden's brain scrambled for something cool to say. What came out was: "My cousin says it's actually based on some Greek mythology thing. About questions."

Maya's eyebrows went up, but not in a mean way. "Wait, really?"

"Yeah, I mean—probably. I could look it up?" The hat felt tight.

"Do it," she said, grinning. "I'm Maya, by the way."

The party came hours later, but Jayden spent most of it outside on the porch, running his thumb over the text he'd sent earlier—the Wikipedia link about the Sphinx and riddles and the price of secrets. Maya had replied with an octopus emoji.

The hat sat on his head, but the weight was gone.

"There you are," Marcus nudged him. "Come inside, dude. You're missing it."

Jayden took off the hat and ran a hand through his hair. Some things you couldn't hide. Some things you didn't want to.

"Yeah," he said, finally really smiling. "Yeah, I'm coming."
