Static on the Line

Elena had been corporate spy for seven years, but nothing prepared her for this: target acquired, dinner invited, spinach stuck in Marcus's teeth as he laughed at something she said.

"You're enjoying the salad," he noted, eyes crinkling with genuine warmth that made her chest tighten.

"It's fresh," she lied, checking the recording device pulsing against her rib like a second, traitorous heart.

Marcus's golden retriever, Barnaby, nudged her hand under the table. His cat, Isis, watched from the counter with calculating yellow eyes—already knew more about human deception than Elena ever would.

"You know," Marcus said, setting down his wine, "I checked the cable installation in the hall closet today. Found something odd." Elena's breath caught. "Splice in the line. Thought you should know."

She waited for the arrest, the accusation. Instead, he poured more wine. "I have a proposal. One that doesn't involve you sitting in a surveillance van for three weeks."

Elena's handler had warned about this: Stockholm syndrome, going native. But as Marcus's fingers traced her wrist, she realized the truth with cold clarity. She wasn't the one being played.

"You knew," she whispered. "Since when?"

"Since Barnaby started barking at the closet wall," Marcus said gently. "But I figured if you wanted to destroy me, you'd have done it by now. Unless there's something worth saving here?"

The recorder hummed against her ribs. Every professional instinct screamed to finish the job. Instead, she reached for her wine, thinking how some attachments are worth more than loyalty to people who'd never remember her name.

"Maybe there is," she said.

The spinach was still in his teeth. It was the most honest thing about the evening.
