Static in the Storm

The HDMI cable lay coiled like a snake on Leo's bedroom floor, taunting him. Three hours until the gaming tournament, and his setup was still ghosting him. Maya sprawled across his bed, French braiding her hair while offering moral support that was mostly just dissing his opponents.

"That Jordan kid? Total bull," she said, fingers deftly weaving through her curls. "Talks big but his KDA ratio is tragic." She paused, squinting at his monitor. "Have you tried restarting everything?"

Leo scoffed. "You think I haven't tried everything? This isn't my first rodeo."

Outside, the summer storm intensified. Rain hammered against the window, and then—LIGHTNING. A blinding flash, followed instantly by thunder that shook the floorboards. The monitor flickered and died. Darkness swallowed the room.

"No no NO," Leo groaned, burying his face in his hands. "This can't be happening."

But Maya was already moving, her phone flashlight cutting through the dark. She found the power strip, checked every connection, her movements calm and methodical. Unlike Leo, whose idea of troubleshooting consisted of unplugging things and plugging them back in while cursing.

"Here," she said, swapping out the fried cable for a spare she'd spotted in his drawer. "You keep emergency backup cables? You really are a disaster waiting to happen."

The monitor hummed back to life. Maya collapsed onto his bed, hair now a perfect waterfall of braids. "You owe me. Like, big time."

Leo stared at her—really looked at his best friend since seventh grade, the girl who'd dated his brother, helped him study for every math test, and never once made him feel small for caring this much about video games.

"Yeah," he said quietly. "I really do."

"Whatever." She grabbed her phone. "Just don't choke when Jordan starts talking smack. I'll be in your ear, roasting him into oblivion."

Leo laughed, the tension in his chest finally loosening. Because with Maya on his team—backup cables and all—he might actually survive this night after all.
