Static in the Storm

Maya's hair refused to cooperate. She'd spent forty-five minutes trying to perfect the effortless waves that looked so natural on Chloe, but somehow ended up with something more resembling a frizz explosion. Which was exactly why she was currently hiding in the bathroom at Tyler's party while everyone else was outside having the time of their lives.

"You good in there?" Her best friend Darcy called through the door.

"Give me a sec," Maya lied, staring at her reflection. The mirror showed someone trying too hard, and it hurt.

Then came the crack of lightning. Like, actually shook the house lightning. The power died instantly, plunging the bathroom into darkness except for the occasional flash through the window.

Great. Now she was trapped. In the dark. At a party where she was already the weird quiet girl.

She opened the door slowly, phone flashlight cutting through the darkness. The living room was chaos — people screaming like they were being murdered, tripping over furniture, someone's phone flashlight sweeping wildly like a lighthouse.

"Everyone chill!" Tyler yelled. "I got this."

The main breaker was in the basement. Maya watched Tyler and his friend Connor head down, then noticed something weird near the aquarium in the corner. The goldfish was floating sideways at the top of the tank.

"Oh no, no no no," she whispered, dropping to her knees. The filter wasn't running. No power, no oxygen. And this fish looked like it was living its final moments.

"Hey, do you have a—" A voice behind her made her jump.

Ethan. The guy she'd been low-key obsessed with since September, who'd barely said two words to her all year. He was holding a thick orange cable, looking like he was about to say something smooth but then saw the fish.

"Is Gerald okay?" he asked, sounding genuinely concerned.

"Gerald?"

"Tyler's goldfish. We named him Gerald last year when we were high and thought we could communicate with fish. Don't ask."

The unexpected burst of a laugh escaped before Maya could stop it. "He's not great. The filter—"

"I've got a portable charger bank thing," Ethan said, crouching beside her. "My car has one of those jump-starter battery packs. We could run the filter off that."

For the next ten minutes, they worked in the flashlight glow, Ethan untangling the cable while Maya figured out which end went where, their shoulders touching occasionally, both of them pretending not to notice. The whole party was upstairs making do with music from someone's phone speaker, but down here it was just them and Gerald the fish.

"Your hair looks good," Ethan said suddenly, not looking at her, focused on connecting the cables.

"What? No it doesn't, it's a frizz ball."

"Nah. It's got personality. Mine's just... there." He ran a hand through his honestly perfect hair and Maya felt something flip in her chest.

"We're saving a fish during a lightning storm while everyone else is up there being basic," she said. "This is weirdly the most normal I've felt all night."

Ethan's phone flashlight flickered. In that moment of darkness, a cat yowled outside somewhere, sounding thoroughly unimpressed with everything.

"You know what?" Ethan said. "Screw the party. Want to just stay down here? I think Gerald needs a babysitter."

Gerald, who was now swimming around like absolutely nothing had happened, blissfully unaware of how much anxiety he'd caused.

"Yeah," Maya said, and for the first time all night, she didn't care what Chloe thought, or if her hair was messy, or if she was being weirdly quiet. "Yeah, I do."

The lightning flashed again, illuminating Ethan's smile in the darkness, and Maya thought maybe the storm wasn't such a disaster after all.
