Static in the Palm
Maya's hair stood on end, literally—thanks to the insane amount of hairspray she'd used before Tyler's party. She adjusted her crop top for the tenth time, checking her reflection in the hallway mirror. The lightning design across her chest felt bold, maybe too bold. What if everyone thought she was trying too hard?
Outside, actual lightning cracked the sky, illuminating the packed living room where Tyler's annual back-to-school bash raged. Someone had fox-printed temporary tattoos all over their arms—probably Jake, who'd been obsessed with that stupid TikTok trend. The bass from the speakers vibrated through the floorboards, matching the butterflies doing backflips in her stomach.
"Maya! You made it!" Sarah called out, dragging her into the kitchen. "We're playing Never Have I Ever. You're SO behind."
Great. The one game guaranteed to expose everyone's embarrassing secrets or make you look like a loser who'd never done anything cool. Maya's palm sweated against her solo cup as she took the spot between Sarah and—oh no—Tyler himself.
"Never have I ever..." Sarah's eyes gleamed with mischief. "...kissed someone in the rain."
Maya stared at her cup. Like, four people drank, including Tyler, whose eyes briefly met hers before darting away. Her heart did this weird little skip thing. Was that a sign? Or was she reading way too much into it because she'd had a crush on him since seventh grade?
"Your turn, fox girl," Tyler nudged her arm, using that nickname because of the fox earrings she always wore. His touch sent literal static electricity up her arm. Or maybe that was just her brain inventing sensations because she was down bad.
"Never have I ever..." Maya's voice shook slightly. "...pretended to like someone's playlist when I actually hated it."
Everyone groaned. "That's SO specific," Jake laughed, but six people drank—including Tyler.
The game continued, the room spinning with laughter, revelations, and the kind of connection that only happens when everyone's being weirdly honest. When lightning flashed again, power cut out completely.
"Everyone stay calm!" someone shouted unnecessarily.
In the darkness, Maya felt someone take her hand. Their palm pressed against hers, fingers intertwining. She knew that touch. She'd imagined it approximately a million times.
"I've actually wanted to kiss you since seventh grade," Tyler whispered near her ear. "But I was scared you'd think I was being weird."
Maya's hair might've been standing up from static, but her heart was pounding for a completely different reason now. The power came back on, but she didn't let go of his hand.
Sometimes the best moments happen when everything goes dark.
