Static in the Cafeteria

I should've known today would be a disaster when my little sister spilled that spinach smoothie all over my favorite white hoodie. Now here I am, fifteen years old, trying to survive first period with a giant green stain right on my chest.

The worst part? I can feel everybody watching me. Not even like, normal looking — I'm talking full-on spy mode. Jake from homeroom literally whispered something to his friends when I walked in, and now they're all lowkey obsessed with my humiliation. I kept my head down, counting the minutes until lunch, when I could hide in the back corner and disappear.

But then the weather turned.

First came the lightning — this insane flash that turned the whole classroom purple for a split second. Then thunder shook the windows so hard the teacher actually jumped. Someone screamed. The power flickered. And I mean EVERYTHING went dark.

We were all herded into the gym for safety, which meant NOW everyone was definitely staring at the spinach kid. I could feel my face burning hotter than the time I accidentally called my teacher "mom" in fifth grade.

That's when Maya found me.

"Hey," she said, sliding onto the floor next to where I'd plastered myself against the bleachers. "I like your shirt. It's... distinctive."

I almost died. But then she smiled — not fake, not making fun. REAL.

"My dad's obsessed with those health smoothies," she continued. "Our kitchen counter looks like a spinach explosion every morning. My brother says it's like drinking a lawn."

We talked for forty minutes while the storm raged outside. About her little sister's obsession with vintage fashion (she collects actual cable knit sweaters from the 90s), about my weird hobby of recording thunder sounds on my phone, about how it feels like everyone's always watching when you just want to be normal.

"You know," Maya said as they finally let us go back to class, "sometimes the most embarrassing stuff ends up being your best story."

She pointed at my chest. "That spinach stain? That's your character development arc."

I walked to my next class feeling something I hadn't felt in months: maybe, just maybe, lightning can strike in the best way possible.
