Static in the Air
Marcus stared at the orange bottle of vitamins on his kitchen counter, his mom's latest attempt to fix his 'teenage mood swings.' The capsules were supposed to help with stress, but nothing could help with what happened at lunch yesterday.
'I heard what Jenna said,' his little sister Leo announced, appearing suddenly with their cat Luna wrapped around her neck like a scarf. 'Everyone heard. The whole cafeteria went dead silent.'
Marcus shoved the vitamin bottle aside. 'It wasn't that bad.'
'She basically said you're trying too hard.' Leo scratched Luna behind the ears. 'Which you are. But whatever.'
Their dog Barnaby chuffed from his bed, sensing the tension. Marcus had adopted the senior dog last year—his one independent decision that his divorced parents actually agreed on. But lately everything felt complicated, even Barnaby.
Outside, the sky turned that weird green-gray color that meant trouble. Thunder rumbled low in his chest.
'Storm's coming,' Leo said, suddenly serious. 'You should go talk to her.'
'Who?'
'Jenna, obviously. You've had a crush on her since seventh grade and now you're both finally in the friend group and you're gonna ruin it by being weird.' Luna jumped down and padded away. 'Also, you're projecting your issues about Dad leaving onto your social life and it's painful to watch.'
Marcus blinked. 'When did you get so smart?'
'Therapy.' She shrugged. 'Also, I'm fifteen, not five.'
Lightning cracked so close the house shook. The power flickered and died, leaving them in gray half-light. Barnaby stood up slowly, his old joints creaking.
'Well,' Leo said. 'Now or never.'
Marcus grabbed his phone, thumb hovering over Jenna's name. The vitamins sat forgotten on the counter. Maybe fixing things wasn't about pills or perfect performances. Maybe it was just about being real, even when the static in the air made everything feel electric and wrong.
He typed: 'Sorry if I was being weird yesterday. Can we talk?'
The three dots appeared immediately. Outside, the rain finally broke, washing everything clean.
