Static & Foxfire
Maya's iphone vibrated against her thigh—third time this period. Mr. Harrison was definitely gonna notice. She slid it under her notebook, heart doing that stupid fluttery thing. Liam. Again.
Behind her, Chloe whispered something to Jessica that sounded like paper-thin laughter. Maya kept her eyes on her chemistry notes, but the words swam.
"Fox," someone said.
Maya looked up. Through the window, past the school's manicured lawn, a fox stood at the edge of the woods. Bright orange against the dull gray of October. Just watching them with weirdly intelligent eyes.
"Whoa," breathed Jake, actually looking up from his phone. The fox's ears twitched. Then it turned and vanished into the trees.
The bell rang. Maya grabbed her bag and bolted, dodging through the hallway crush. Outside, the air smelled like autumn—dead leaves and something sweet. Her grandmother's backyard papaya tree flashed in her memory, sticky juice running down her chin, Hawaii feeling like another lifetime.
She found Liam by the water fountain, messing with his own phone. His hair was doing that thing where it curled over his ears. Maya's chest tightened.
"Hey," he said, not looking up. "So, Saturday?"
Saturday. The party. Chloe's party. Everyone was gonna be there.
"I don't know," Maya said. "Chloe hates me."
Liam finally looked at her. "Chloe hates everyone. Come anyway."
The fox appeared in her mind again—watching, waiting, knowing something she didn't.
"Fine," Maya heard herself say. "But if it's awkward, I'm leaving."
Liam grinned. That crooked thing that made her stomach flip. "Deal."
Saturday came in a blur of outfit changes and frantic texts. When Maya walked into Chloe's basement, the air was thick with expensive perfume and nervous energy. People she'd known since seventh grade transformed into strangers with red cups and practiced laughs.
Then she saw it—Chloe's phone, abandoned on a table. The screen lit up with a notification: MAYA ROSALES, chiming in with an iphone's default sound.
Maya moved before she could think, snatching it up. New message thread. To someone named Unknown.
"i know she's annoying but she's actually kind of pretty"
"lol whatever ask her to dance"
Liam.
The room spun. Maya shoved the phone back and headed for the door, but Chloe was already there, watching her with fox-sharp eyes.
"He likes you, you know," Chloe said, sounding weirdly genuine. "Like, actually likes you."
Maya blinked. "What?"
"I'm not always terrible." Chloe shrugged. "Sometimes I'm just... bored."
Outside, the air hit Maya like forgiveness. She found Liam on the porch, phone in hand.
"You coming?" he asked.
Maya thought about papaya summers and foxes in the woods and the way things looked different when you actually paid attention.
"Yeah," she said. "I'm coming."
