Static Electric
Maya's hair was doing that thing again—static-frizz halo like she'd stuck her fork in an electrical socket. She tugged her beanie down, praying nobody noticed the disaster happening under the hat.
Her iPhone buzzed. Third time in two minutes. Kai was blowing up her group chat: *where r u?? this party is diff without u*
Maya hovered outside Ryan's house, heart racing like she'd drunk five espressos. First real party. First time hanging with the popular crowd. First time realizing that maybe, possibly, Kai liked her back.
She pushed through the door.
Instant chaos. Bass thumping. People everywhere. And there he was—Kai, leaning against the wall like some ancient Egyptian statue, mysterious and unreadable. A modern sphinx with his riddles and secrets.
"Hey." He stepped closer. "You came."
Maya's phone slipped from her sweaty grip. Clattered to the floor.
Smooth. So freaking smooth.
Kai laughed, not mean, just... real. He crouched down, grabbed it, and their fingers brushed. Something electric shot through her—like lightning striking without warning.
"Your hair," he said, eyes soft. "It's kind of amazing."
She froze. "What? It's a disaster."
"No, it's..." He stepped closer. "Like it's got its own personality. Like it's not afraid to be itself."
Outside, actual lightning cracked the sky. Rain drummed against the windows.
Kai reached up, tugged gently at her hat brim. "You don't need to hide, you know."
Maya let him pull it off. Her hair sprang free, wild and electric and completely hers. For the first time all night, she breathed.
"I hate this thing sometimes," she admitted, gesturing at her phone. "Like I'm missing out if I'm not checking it every second."
Kai slipped his phone into his pocket. "Same. But maybe right now?" He smiled, and it was like watching the sun come out. "Right now we can just be here. Not anywhere else."
Maya nodded, hair frizzing in the humidity, phone dark in her hand, hat forgotten on the couch. Something inside her settled.
Yeah. Maybe this was what it felt like to actually show up.
