Static Between Us
Maya's cat Luna circled her ankles as she stared at her phone, thumb hovering over Jake's profile. The party had already started without her.
"You going?" Luna meowed, jumping onto her desk and knocking over a half-empty soda can. Maya sighed, rubbing the cat's ears. Jake, the fox-eyed senior with hair that fell across his face like he didn't care, would be there. So would Brianna, who'd been giving Maya the side-eye since the incident in AP Bio.
The party was at Tyler's house, which meant the mechanical bull would be set up in the backyard. Last time, Tyler's older brother had drunkenly taken the bull by the horns — literally — and ended up with a broken arm and a viral TikTok.
Maya grabbed her phone. Four texts from her best friend Sanjana: *r u coming?? Jake is asking abt u* *hello???* *don't make me go alone* *fine whatever*
She groaned. The humidity was oppressive, summer storm clouds gathering outside her window like something heavy and unspoken.
"Fine," she told Luna. "But if I die of social awkwardness, you can have my room."
The party was already in full swing when she arrived. People were swimming in Tyler's pool — clothes optional for the brave, which mostly meant Tyler's lacrosse team. Jake stood near the back fence, red Solo cup in hand, laughing at something Brianna said. Maya's stomach did that uncomfortable thing where it felt like it was simultaneously falling and rising.
Then she saw it: Brianna's hand on Jake's arm. Not casual. Intentional.
Maya turned toward the pool, stripping off her flip-flops. The water was exactly what she needed — cold and shocking and real. She dove in, surfacing to the sound of someone yelling *CANNONBALL* and a wave of chlorinated water hitting her face.
When she climbed out, soaking wet and feeling somehow more herself, Jake was standing there.
"Hey," he said. "Sanjana said you might not come."
"Clearly," Maya said, dripping onto the concrete. Because subtlety had never been her strong suit, especially when she felt like a drowned rat.
Jake grinned, and it was like lightning struck somewhere behind her ribs. "Wanna try the bull? Tyler's dad disabled the safety settings."
"You first, Fox," she shot back, and immediately regretted it. But instead of looking weirded out, Jake laughed — this genuine, surprised sound that made something loosen in her chest.
"Deal," he said. "But if I break something, you're visiting me in the ER."
Outside, the first real drops of rain began to fall. Perfect timing for Maya to do something completely out of character, like maybe actually live a little.
"I'll hold your phone," she said. "But you're going down."
Jake's smile widened as he headed toward the mechanical bull, and Maya's cat would definitely want to hear about this later.
