Static at the Bone
The spinach had been stuck in Marcus's front tooth for twenty minutes, and Elena still hadn't told him. She watched him laugh at something his boss said across the dinner table, the green fleck flashing with each display of teeth, and thought: this is what marriage looks like. This is the precise geometry of resentment.
She'd spent six months planning this dinner party—their anniversary, technically, though Marcus had forgotten until that morning. The salad was wilting now. The water in the crystal glasses had gone warm and flat, like the air between them.
"You're being a bull," she whispered when his boss stepped away to refill his drink.
Marcus turned to her, his face flushing. "Excuse me?"
"A bull. Charging at things. You charged into this merger without asking me. You charged us into debt for this house. You charged into that conversation with Richard just now, and you sounded—" She stopped herself. "You sounded like someone I don't know."
Outside, lightning cracked the sky in half, sudden and violent. The room went white for a heartbeat, and in that flash, Elena saw everything: the way Marcus's hands had stopped touching her unless someone was watching. The way he'd started sleeping with his back to her. The way she'd stopped telling him things because his reactions had become predictable, defensive, sharp.
"I'm doing this for us," Marcus said, but his voice cracked. The spinach was still there.
"Are you?" Elena asked quietly. She reached across the table and brushed the green fleck from his tooth with her thumb. Marcus flinched. His boss was returning, grinning, holding a bottle of wine that cost more than Elena's first car.
"Saved you a glass," Richard said, and lightning flashed again, and Marcus smiled with clean teeth, and Elena thought: this is what it looks like when someone decides to stay. When they decide that the weight of what they've built is heavier than the ache of what they've lost.
She took the water glass. Drank it down, warm and flat.
"Thanks," she said. "I think I needed that."
