Static and Sparks

lightningvitamincablecat

The **lightning** struck at exactly 11:47 PM—right as Alex's anonymous gaming stream hit ten thousand viewers.

His entire setup died. Router, monitors, the RGB strips that made his room look like a cyberpunk fever dream. All of it, reduced to expensive paperweights in one blinding flash of purple-white outside his window.

"No, no, NO." Alex ripped his headset off, heart hammering. Three months of building a secret identity as "StaticMask"—the anonymous speedrunner who'd somehow become borderline famous in the streaming world—and one summer storm had just ended it.

His **cat**, Nacho, chose that exact moment to leap onto his desk and knock over the emergency supply of neon-orange **vitamin** gummies his mom insisted he take because "you never see actual sunlight, Alejandro, you're going to get rickets."

Nacho batted a gummy across the floor like a tiny orange hockey puck. Alex buried his face in his hands.

Then his phone buzzed.

StaticMask_Discord: Yo, you good?

It was Raven. The new girl at school with the half-shaved head and the vintage band tees who'd somehow found his secret Discord server during geometry class when she'd caught him watching speedrun clips on his phone.

Alex stared at the message. She was the only person who knew. The only one.

storm_killed my internet, he typed back. might be done streaming for a while.

Raven: My building's **cable** is down too. Want to just... hang out? I've got frozen pizza.

Alex's fingers hovered over the keyboard. This was it—the moment his online persona and actual life crashed into each other like two freight trains made of anxiety and hope.

sure. where?

Her apartment was three buildings over. Alex showed up in his oversized hoodie, still buzzing with adrenaline, carrying Nacho in a carrier because he'd panicked and couldn't leave his cat alone in a dark apartment during a storm.

Raven opened the door with frozen pizza on a baking sheet, her hair in the same messy bun she wore to calculus. She looked at Alex. Then at Nacho. Then back at Alex.

"Is that the cat from your streams?"

Alex froze. She'd SEEN him? She'd KNOWN this whole time?

"Wait, you knew about Nacho?"

"Dude." She stepped aside, grinning. "I've been moderating your chat for like, two months. That orange gummy incident? Classic Nacho content. I was literally going to ask if you wanted to collab."

Collab. As in, reveal his identity to the entire internet.

They sat on her floor eating slightly burnt pizza while the storm raged outside, Nacho purring between them like a tiny, traitorous furry bridge between two worlds.

"So," Alex said, around a mouthful of pepperoni. "Does this mean I'm not alone in being weirdly anxious about everyone finding out I'm just some random sophomore?"

Raven laughed. "StaticMask, bro. I run the account @PixelGrim. You literally subbed to me last week."

Alex stopped chewing. "Wait. THE PixelGrim? The one who did the 45-minute Any% RPG run last month?"

"The one and only."

The **lightning** flashed again, illuminating her wicked grin. Alex started laughing too, a genuine laugh that he usually reserved for private streams with the chat turned off.

Outside, the storm raged on. Inside, something quiet and electric sparked between two people who'd spent months hiding behind screens, thinking they were alone.

"Next time," Raven said, tossing a vitamin gummy to Nacho, "let's do a collab stream. My place. My cable's way more reliable."

"Deal," Alex said. "But only if Nacho can be the official mascot."

"Obviously."

Alex walked home at 2 AM with Nacho in the carrier, his phone buzzing with new messages from friends and subscribers and possibilities he'd never considered. The storm had cleared, leaving behind something infinitely more interesting than a perfect internet connection.

Sometimes, he thought, watching the first stars break through the clouds, you need a little static to find the signal that actually matters.
