Static and Grizzly Moments
Marcus stood in front of the bathroom mirror, staring at the disaster zone that used to be his hair. His mom's "friend" who was "totally a professional hairdresser" had given him what she called "a modern textured cut" but what actually looked like someone had attacked his head with a lawnmower while drunk.
"This can't be happening," he muttered, running his hand through the patchy mess. "Homecoming is TONIGHT."
Outside, thunder rattled the window frame. The weather app showed a massive storm rolling in, and Marcus could practically feel the electricity in the air. Perfect. Just perfect.
His phone buzzed. Skylar: "u coming 2 the game? i saved u a seat :)"
Marcus's stomach did that thing it always did when Skylar messaged him — like someone had set off fireworks in his gut. He'd been planning to ask her to dance tonight at the after-party, had practiced exactly what to say in front of his mirror approximately forty-seven times. But now? With THIS hair?
"Yea b there soon," he typed back, then stared at his reflection. "You're going," he told himself. "You're going to put on a hoodie, own the disaster, and ask Skylar to dance like a boss."
The walk to school was miserable. Rain spit at him intermittently, and the sky kept lighting up with these terrifying flashes of lightning that made everything look like a strobe light from a horror movie. Marcus yanked his hood down low, praying nobody could see the tragedy underneath.
When he reached the football field, the game was already chaotic. Everyone was screaming, the band was playing, and the scoreboard glowed through the gloom. Marcus spotted Skylar immediately — she was wearing this cute denim jacket and laughing with her friends, her hair perfect despite the humidity.
He started toward her, heart hammering, when suddenly — CRACK.
The most enormous bolt of lightning split the sky, so bright it blinded him. The whole stadium went silent for half a second before someone screamed.
"BEAR! THE BEAR!"
Marcus blinked through spots in his vision. The school mascot — this poor sophomore in an enormous grizzly bear costume — had somehow gotten loose during the chaos and was now stumbling across the field, looking as confused and miserable as Marcus felt.
But that wasn't even the worst part.
The bear costume had caught on the concession stand fence during the lightning flash, and now the mascot was literally stuck, flailing around while everyone pointed and laughed. Including Skylar.
Including, Marcus realized with horror, himself.
Then he caught Skylar's eye. She wasn't laughing at the bear anymore — she was looking RIGHT AT HIM, and she'd somehow managed to pull back his hood when she'd grabbed his arm during the chaos. Now she was STARING at his hair.
And then she smiled.
Not a mean smile. A genuine, adorable smile that made his knees feel like jelly.
"Did you... did you cut it yourself?" she called over the noise, grinning.
"NO," Marcus yelled back, somehow finding his voice. "My mom's friend attacked me with scissors! It's a hate crime!"
Skylar laughed — actually laughed, and then she grabbed his hand and pulled him toward the concession stand where the mascot was still trapped against the fence like a giant, fuzzy disaster.
"Come on," she said. "Let's go save Kevin from that bear costume before he has a mental breakdown. Also, I kinda like the hair. It's... fearless."
Marcus stood there, rain starting to fall for real now, lightning still flashing overhead, his hair a disaster, a bear mascot stuck to a fence nearby, and Skylar holding his hand.
"Fearless," he repeated. "Yeah. That's me."
And then, because sometimes the universe gives you exactly what you need even when it looks like a disaster, he asked her to dance right there in the rain. She said yes, and neither of them cared that they were both completely soaked by the time the song ended.
