Stains on Everything

Maya's first day at Ridgeview High, she chose the wrong seat in the cafeteria. Behind her: Tyler Chen, whose hair fell in that perfect, effortless cascade that basically screamed I play guitar and know it. Her hair, meanwhile, was doing something undefined and aggressive.

She'd spent the morning experimenting with mousse, trying to look less like herself and more like the girls in her TikTok feed. The result was a weird, crispy halo.

Then came the lunch situation.

Her mom, in a bout of enthusiasm for Maya's 'big day,' had packed her childhood favorites: a container of papaya chunks with lime, and a spinach salad with her grandma's sesame dressing. Maya stared at the Tupperware like it was radioactive. Across the cafeteria, people were eating pizza. Normal food.

'What's that smell?' Tyler's friend asked.

Maya's palms went slick. She could feel the sweat coating her hands, making everything worse. This was it. The social death sentence.

But then Tyler turned around. 'Wait, is that papaya with lime?' His eyes actually lit up. 'My grandma makes me eat that whenever I'm sick. Says it's 'cooling energy' or whatever.'

'Yeah,' Maya said, voice small. 'And spinach salad.'

'Bro.' He shook his head, grinning. 'I have a leaf of spinach stuck in my braces right now. I've been trying to get it out all period.'

Something shifted. Maya's palms stopped sweating. Her weird hair suddenly felt like armor instead of a mistake.

'Trade you?' Tyler slid a slice of pepper pizza toward her. 'I'm desperate for that papaya.'

'You actually like it?'

'Man, I'm obsessed. My friends think I'm weird but—'

'They don't know what they're missing.'

'Exactly.' Tyler grabbed a papaya chunk. 'This lunch situation is iconic. No cap.'

Maya smiled. For the first time all day, the tightness in her chest loosened. Her hair might still be a disaster, her lunch might still be the most cultural experience in the cafeteria, but somehow, none of it mattered. She was exactly who she was: mousse disasters and papaya chunks and all.
