Spying on the Pyramid
Maya stared at her iPhone screen at 2:47 AM, eyes burning, feeling like a straight-up zombie after three hours of stalking Sophia's Instagram. The social pyramid at Northwood High had shifted again, and Maya needed intel.
She'd become a digital spy without meaning to. Every night, she'd scroll through posts, analyze stories, track who was hanging out with whom. It was exhausting but necessary—sophomore year was brutal enough without being caught on the wrong side of the social hierarchy.
"You good?" her best friend Kiana asked at lunch the next day, sliding into the booth across from her.
Maya shoved her phone in her pocket. "Fine. Just... tired."
"Girl, you look like death." Kiana pushed a bottle across the table. "Take this. My mom's all about that wellness life now."
Maya squinted at the label. "Gummy vitamins? Really?"
"They're for stress! Or something. Honestly, just take them before you pass out in third period."
That afternoon, Maya got a notification: Sophia was at the mall with Jordan—the guy Maya had been crushing on for months. Her spy network (OK, just screenshot evidence from mutuals) had paid off. But watching them together through the mall atrium glass, seeing Jordan laugh at something Sophia said, Maya felt her stomach twist.
The pyramid wasn't just about popularity anymore. It was about who got to be happy, who got to be chosen, who got to matter.
Her phone buzzed. A text from Jordan: "Hey, I heard you're good at algebra. Can you help me with the homework? I'm struggling."
Maya stared at it. This wasn't a spy mission. This wasn't climbing some social ladder or decoding hierarchies. This was just... a guy asking for help.
She typed back: "Sure. Library at 4?"
That night, Maya didn't stalk anyone's Instagram. She didn't analyze the social pyramid. She just did her algebra homework and actually slept, waking up feeling something close to human for the first time in months.
The pyramid would still be there tomorrow. But for now, she was done being a spy.
