Spy Game at the Padel Court
I felt like a total spy, lurking behind the bleachers in my oversized hoodie, watching Zara effortlessly spike that yellow ball across the padel court. She was the queen of the social pyramid at Northwood High, and I was barely a pebble.
"You coming or what?" My little brother's voice cut through my thoughts. He stood there holding Buster's leash, our Golden Retriever practically yanking his arm off.
Buster—my ride-or-die since fourth grade—had zero chill around other dogs. Which was exactly why I'd agreed to this humiliation: my parents forced me to dog-sit while they went to some adult thing, and Zara's annual padel tournament was the only place in town that allowed dogs on the sidelines.
"I'm just observing," I said, which was bull. I was terrified.
The social pyramid at Northwood had clear levels: varsity athletes at the top, then the theater kids, then everyone else. I'd been nobody until last month, when I accidentally posted a TikTok of myself lip-syncing in my bathroom that got 50K views. Suddenly people actually knew my name.
Zara spotted me. Her face lit up.
"OMG, you're the TikTok girl!" She jogged over, padel racket on her shoulder. "Wanna play? We need a fourth for mixed doubles."
My stomach did a backflip.
"Sure," I said, like it was no big deal. "But Buster's kinda extra."
Zara laughed. "Dogs are literally my favorite."
And that's how I ended up on the court, sweating through my favorite shirt while Zara taught me to serve. Buster barked encouragement from the sidelines. Every time I missed, Zara's boyfriend Luke—untouchable varsity captain—would mutter something that felt like a jab, but Zara just rolled her eyes.
"Ignore him, he's just salty 'cause you almost hit that winner."
Afterward, we all sat on the grass sharing Zara's expensive snacks. Buster rested his head on Luke's knee like they were best friends. Luke actually smiled.
"You're not bad," he said. "For a beginner."
The pyramid didn't feel so steep anymore.
That night, I posted a video: me, Zara, Luke, and Buster, sweaty and laughing after our padel match. Caption: "New squad who dis?"
It got 100K likes in an hour.
Maybe I wasn't a spy anymore. Maybe I was finally part of the game.
