Split Ends and Finish Lines

Maya's hands shook as she held the electric blue dye over her bathroom sink. Her natural curls had always been safe, predictable—just like her life. Just like her friend group, honestly.

Three months ago, she wouldn't have dreamed of showing up to track practice looking like a whole different person. But something about qualifying for regionals had flipped a switch in her brain. If she was fast enough to compete against the best runners in the state, maybe she was brave enough to finally be herself.

The next morning, Maya walked into homeroom feeling like she'd just run a marathon without stretching. Silence fell over her usual table near the windows. Her best friend since seventh grade, Chloe, stared like Maya had grown a second head.

"What did you DO?" Chloe asked, loud enough that three rows turned around. "That's... not really you."

"It's me now," Maya said, her voice barely above a whisper. Her heart pounded like she was mid-sprint, lungs burning, legs heavy.

That afternoon at practice, her coach didn't even blink. "About time, Rodriguez. When are you gonna dye the whole thing blue?"

Her teammates actually thought it was sick. Which was weird, because these were the same people she'd been too scared to really talk to for three years. Meanwhile, her actual friend group had been weirdly distant all day, leaving her on read in their group chat.

Maya realized something as she laced up her spikes for the 400-meter: some friends were like comfortable shoes—familiar but worn out. Others were like this new hair—scary at first, but exactly what she needed.

"Hey Maya," said Jayden from the next lane over. "Your hair looks sick. You want me to braid it for you? My little sister has curly hair too."

And just like that, Maya wasn't running from anything anymore. She was running toward something real.
