The club pool sparkled like something out of a TikTok edit, but Maya felt about as smooth as a buffering video. She clutched her iPhone like it was her only connection to reality, which honestly, it kinda was. This was her third weekend here and she'd already mastered the art of looking busy while doing absolutely nothing.
"Hey, you coming?" Chloe called from the padel court, waving a racket like she'd known Maya forever. They'd been in the same grade since kindergarten but somehow operated in completely different orbits. Chloe was the kind of effortless popular that made everything look easy, while Maya was still calculating her every move like it was a math problem.
"Maybe later," Maya said, then immediately felt the cringe. Since when did she say things like that? She wasn't some mysterious character in a coming-of-age movie.
Her rescue came in the form of a wet, very enthusiastic golden retriever named Buster, who decided that Chloe's shin was the perfect spot to shake off his swimming adventure. Chloe laughed, actually laughed, as water sprayed everywhere. And just like that, the invisible wall between them dissolved a little.
"That's your dog?" Maya asked, stepping closer.
"My brother's," Chloe said, tossing the ball again. "He's more my parents' project than anything else. They're obsessed with him being in all these activities - padel, swimming, tennis, whatever. It's exhausting just watching."
Maya's phone buzzed in her hand - her mom checking in, like always. But for the first time, she shoved it deep in her pocket instead of immediately replying.
"Wanna help me wrangle this beast?" Chloe asked.
And suddenly Maya wasn't the new girl trying to fit into someone else's world anymore. She was just a teenager, standing by a pool on a perfect summer day, making a real, actual friend while a very wet dog shook water all over both of them. Some things, she realized, were way better than any perfectly curated Instagram post could ever capture.
