Splash Into Something Real

Maya's iphone buzzed with the fifteenth notification of the night. Another TikTok she had to watch, another friend whose life was apparently perfect at龙湖 lake party while she sat at home.

"You coming?" Kai's text read. Simple. No pressure.

Her brother's goldfish circled its bowl in the corner of her room—just swimming in endless loops, same as every day. Sometimes Maya felt like that fish, going through motions while everyone else was living their main character era.

She grabbed her hoodie. The night air smelled like chlorine and freedom when she slipped out the back door. The neighborhood pool was supposed to be closed, but everyone knew the latch was broken.

Three figures splashed in the deep end. Kai, Jen, and some new guy with bright orange hair—definitely not from around here. They weren't supposed to be here either. This wasn't the cool kids' party. This was something else.

"Maya!" Kai waved her over like she'd been invited all along. "We're seeing who can hold their breath longest. Loser does the triple dare."

"Pass," she started, but then orange-hair guy surfaced, gasping. "Your turn, new girl."

Something about the way he said it—not mean, not challenging. Just... including her. Like she was already part of whatever this was. Maya kicked off her flip-flops. The water hit her skin like ice, then wrapped around her, weightless and right.

They swam until their fingers wrinkled, talked about nothing and everything. No filters, no curated moments, just three strangers in a closed pool at midnight while her iphone sat forgotten on the pool deck, its screen lighting up with notifications that suddenly seemed so small.

Later, walking home with damp hair and chlorine-stained skin, Maya realized her goldfish wasn't stuck in loops anymore. It was just swimming. And maybe that was enough—just being in the water, not performing for anyone.

Her phone buzzed again. She ignored it. Some things were better experienced than posted.
