Spinach & The Social Suicide

dogbearspinach

Kai's first real house party. The basement of Jake's suburban castle thumped with bass that vibrated in his teeth. He'd spent forty-five minutes perfecting his hair—carefully messy, just like Tyrell's—and now he leaned against the wall pretending to check nonexistent notifications.

"Yo, you good?" Maya materialized with red solo cups. Her eyes were too observant. "You've been standing there since we arrived."

"Chilling. Just chilling." Kai accepted the cup, relieved she'd noticed enough to rescue him. "Testing the waters."

"The waters are fine." She bumped his shoulder. "Talk to people. I believe in you."

Emboldened, Kai grabbed a plate of appetizers from the kitchen counter. Spinach artichoke dip—fancy, mature, exactly what someone confident would eat. He was mid-bite when Jake's chocolate lab, Bear, burst through the sliding door like a furry freight train.

Everyone screamed. Kai choked. A chunk of spinach launched from his mouth directly onto Brianna's pristine white sneakers.

"My JORDANS!" Brianna shrieked.

Bear, sensing chaos, seized his moment. The dog snatched Kai's remaining spinach dip from his grasp and bolted, leaving a green slime trail across the carpet.

"BEAR! NO!" Jake's older sister chased after the dog.

Kai stood frozen, spinach crumbs on his chin, humiliation burning his cheeks like radiation. This was it. Social suicide. He'd be known as Spinach Kid until graduation. Maybe beyond.

Then Maya started laughing. Not mean laughter, but actual laughter, doubled-over, can't-breathe laughter.

"Did you see that?" she wheezed. "Bear just yeeted your dip across the room!"

Someone else laughed. Then Tyrell. Then Brianna, despite her shoes.

"Bro," Tyrell said, clapping Kai's shoulder, "that was legendary. Bear hates spinach too? Respect."

Kai exhaled. Maybe disaster was just opportunity in disguise. "Yeah," he managed, grinning. "Bear and I, we have standards."

Maya handed him a napkin. "You good now?"

"Yeah," Kai said, and this time he meant it. "I'm good."

Bear returned, spinach mustache and all, and Kai finally joined the party.
