Spinach Teeth & Summer Waves

Maya's first real summer job at Splash Kingdom water park wasn't exactly the glamorous start to high school she'd envisioned. Three weeks in, and she was still mastering the art of looking alive while manning the lazy river entrance.

"You got spinach in your teeth," Malik said, leaning against the cable railing beside her. He was the kind of effortlessly cool that made Maya's carefully curated aesthetic feel try-hard.

Maya's stomach dropped. She'd literally just eaten that healthy smoothie bowl because her TikTok feed said it would give her "summer glow energy." Instead, it had given her social suicide.

"Thanks," she muttered, wiping furiously at her mouth while trying to maintain some shred of dignity.

"No problem." Malik's phone buzzed. He checked it, then: "Pool party at Jordan's tonight. You should come."

The words hung in the humid summer air like possibility. Jordan's parties were legendary — the kind everyone whispered about Monday morning.

Maya almost said yes. But then she remembered last weekend's disaster: trying to casually cannonball into the water only to surface with her bikini top completely gone. The group chat had been ruthless.

"I've got... plans," she lied, because apparently she was allergic to good things.

Later that night, as she doomscrolled through party Instagram stories, Malik texted: Spinach-free dip promised. Next time?

Maya typed and deleted three responses before settling on: Bet.

Some summer waves were worth catching, even if you wiped out a few times first.
