Spinach Teeth Summer
Maya stood at the edge of the lake party, clutching her red Solo cup like it was a lifeline. The August heat had already turned her perfectly flat-ironed hair into a frizzy halo around her head. She'd spent forty-five minutes this morning making sure her curls behaved, but Minnesota humidity clearly had other plans.
"Yo Maya! You good?" Jake called from where he was standing neck-deep in the water. His wet hair looked perfect, obviously. Because the universe was unfair like that.
"Yeah, just chillin'!" she lied, taking a sip of her drink. The lake water sparkled behind him, catching the sunlight like diamonds. Everyone else was already swimming, laughing, having the time of their lives. Meanwhile, Maya was stuck in her own head, overthinking everything like always.
The real problem was Liam. He was sitting on the dock, shirtless, looking like a Greek god who'd accidentally wandered into a Minnesota lake party. Maya had been crushing on him since seventh grade, and this was supposed to be her summer to finally make a move. But every time she tried to talk to him, she froze up like Windows 95.
Then came the lunch disaster. Someone's mom had brought salad, and in her nervousness around Liam, Maya had been so busy trying to look chill that she didn't notice the spinach stuck between her front teeth until twenty minutes later. By then, she'd already smiled at Liam like six times.
She literally wanted to die.
Maya bolted to the bathroom, furiously brushing her teeth until her gums hurt. When she came back, her hair had gone from cute curls to full-on frizz explosion, and she was pretty sure she had raccoon eyes from where she'd rubbed them.
"Hey," Liam said, appearing beside her. "You okay? You took off kinda fast."
"Yeah, just... bathroom emergency," Maya mumbled, feeling her face burn. "I'm good."
"Cool." He paused. "I like your hair, by the way. It looks wild today."
Maya froze. Was that a compliment? Or was he saying she looked like a crazy person? "Oh... thanks?"
"No, I mean it." Liam's face turned slightly pink. "It's cute. Different."
They stood there for a moment, the sounds of the party swirling around them. Water splashed, people laughed, someone's phone blasted TikTok audio. But it was like they were in this tiny bubble together.
"So," Liam said, "you doing anything tomorrow? My friends are having a bonfire."
Maya's heart did that thing where it felt like it was going to beat out of her chest. "I might be free."
"Let me get your number then?" He pulled out his phone.
As she typed her number into his contacts, Maya caught sight of herself in the reflection of the cabin window. Her hair was a mess. She probably still had spinach somewhere. She was awkward and nervous and nothing went according to plan.
But Liam was smiling at her like she was the most beautiful thing he'd seen all day.
Some summers, you learn that perfection isn't the point. Sometimes the messy moments — the frizzy hair, the spinach teeth, the awkward conversations — are the ones that actually matter.
