Spinach Teeth & Lightning Strikes

Maya's phone buzzed with Jordan's text: "party at 8. u coming?"

She stared at her reflection, smoothing her vintage Fox Racing hoodie—her armor for tonight. Jordan had been her best friend since sixth grade, but lately things felt... different. Jordan was leveling up socially, while Maya was still figuring out who she even was.

The party was already lit when she arrived. Someone had brought actual spinach dip—the fancy kind, not that gross frozen stuff. Maya helped herself, trying to look casual, like she belonged here.

Then she saw him: Caleb, the guy she'd been lowkey crushing on since September. He was laughing with his friends, all effortless confidence and perfect hair. Maya's stomach did that thing where it forgot how to organs.

She made her way over, channeling her inner social butterfly. But as she smiled at something Caleb said, Jordan's eyes went wide.

"Maya, wait—" Jordan started, but it was too late.

The flash of a phone camera hit her like lightning. A different girl showed her the screen: bright green spinach wedged between her front teeth, looking like a miniature bear had taken a nap in her mouth.

The room went silent. For like, actual centuries. Maya's face burned hot enough to power a small city.

Then Jordan started cracking up. Not mean laughing—like, actual tears-streaming-down-face laughter. "Bro, that's EMBARRASSING but also kind of iconic?"

Something shifted. Maya caught her reflection in a window and started giggling too. Soon half the party was laughing, including Caleb, who somehow managed to still look cute while doing it.

"Fresh spinach," someone joked. "Farm to table, literally."

Later, sitting on the roof with Jordan, eating cold pizza and watching actual lightning flicker across the sky, Maya realized something: the night hadn't gone according to plan. But Jordan was still there, still her person. And sometimes the most mortifying moments become the best stories.

"Spinach teeth forever," Jordan said, bumping her shoulder.

"Fox Racing girl for life," Maya replied, and they both lost it again.

Some friends are just worth the awkwardness.
