Spinach Teeth & Cable Knit Sweaters

Maya's first shift at The Green Spoon wasn't exactly the fresh start she'd imagined. She spent three hours chopping spinach until her fingers were permanently stained green, and her crush—the gorgeous senior everyone called Fox because of their copper hair and wicked smile—sat in booth four with their friends.

"Your sweater is giving retired librarian," Fox's friend announced loudly, and Maya wanted to melt into the floorboards. The cable knit sweater had seemed like a good idea that morning, but now she just felt small and wrong and painfully sixteen.

Fox caught her eye and winked. "I think it's cozy."

Maya practically floated back to the kitchen, clutching a water pitcher like it was her lifeline.

The universe, being the universe, chose that exact moment to intervene. As she leaned over booth seven to refill waters, her elbow knocked against a massive bowl of creamed spinach. The entire thing splattered across the front of her cable knit sweater in a spectacular green explosion.

Dead silence.

Then Fox started laughing. Not mean laughter—genuine, doubled-over, can't-breathe laughter. "That's literally iconic,"

Fox slid into the booth across from her. "Want to know a secret? Last week, I walked into a glass door at Chipotle while holding a burrito. It exploded everywhere."

Maya blinked. "Seriously?"

"Straight up. There's still rice in my favorite Converse."

They grinned at each other, and suddenly the spinach stains didn't matter so much.

"So," Fox said, pulling out their phone. "Since your shirt is already destroyed, want to ditch and get boba?"

Maya looked down at her green-stained sweater, then back at Fox's smile.

"Absolutely."

Sometimes the worst moments become the best stories. And sometimes, a spinach disaster is exactly what you need.
