Spinach Stuck in the Pyramid

The cafeteria's social hierarchy was like a pyramid, and I was definitely at the bottom—right next to the wilted salad bar. I'd been running from my awkwardness all freshman year, dodging eye contact, keeping my head down.

"Yo, Marcus!" Jamal called from the popular table. "Your dog just busted into the courtyard!"

My golden retriever, Buster? At school? I bolted outside, my lunch tray abandoned. There he was, tail wagging like crazy, surrounded by cool kids. And not just any cool kids—Chloe was there. Chloe with the perfect hair and the actual smile, not the fake one she gave everyone else.

Buster had somehow gotten his snout into someone's takeout container. Spinach was everywhere. All over his snout, his paws, the ground.

Chloe was laughing. Not mean laughing, but actual laughing. "He's so extra!" she said, scratching behind Buster's ears. "Hey Marcus, your dog is literally my spirit animal."

My palms were sweating so hard I thought they'd short-circuit if I touched anything. "Yeah, he's... pretty chill." I managed, my voice cracking. Cool.

"Dude, you got spinach in your teeth," someone whispered.

I wiped my mouth frantically. No spinach. Everyone laughed, but this time it felt different. Lighter.

"Marcus, right?" Chloe held out her palm for a fist bump. "You're in my history class. You always have the best takes on the lectures."

We talked for twenty minutes while Buster made friends with half the junior class. By the time my dad came to retrieve him, I'd somehow been invited to a party on Friday.

Walking back inside, I realized something: The pyramid wasn't real. It was just a bunch of terrified people pretending to be confident. Even at the top.

I grabbed a fresh lunch, sat with Jamal, and actually laughed at his jokes. Turns out, sometimes you need a dog to crash your school and cover everything in spinach to figure out that nobody's really watching you as closely as you think they are.
