Spinach Stuck at the Top

I stared at my reflection, wondering why my mom thought spinach smoothies were the key to becoming cool. The green sludge sat in my stomach like a brick as I walked toward the country club, my heart doing cartwheels.

The padel courts gleamed under the afternoon sun, where the popular kids ruled like they owned the place. Jordan, with his impossible jawline and orange headband, laughed at something Maya said. She stood at the top of our school's social pyramid, and I was somewhere near the bottom, probably still paying taxes.

"Hey! You coming?" Jordan called, waving me over. My stomach did that thing where it forgets how to function.

"Yeah, just—"

I caught my reflection in the court's glass wall. A massive chunk of spinach wedged between my front teeth like a green flag of surrender. My face burned hotter than my mom's "wellness" lectures.

"You good, Alex?" Maya asked, genuinely concerned, which somehow made it worse.

I made a split-second decision. I could run away and spend the rest of high school as "that kid who fled from padel," or I could own it.

"Actually," I said, pointing at my teeth, "I've been working on this new look. It's called 'sustainable fashion.'"

Jordan stared for a second, then burst out laughing. Not mean laughter, but the real kind. "Dude, that's actually kind of iconic."

Maya handed me a napkin. "Here. But honestly, it's not like anyone's looking at your teeth."

She smiled, and for the first time, I noticed she had a tiny bit of orange from her snack stuck in her braces.

"You've got some orange in your teeth," I said, gesturing to my own.

Maya's eyes went wide, then she laughed too. "Okay, we're both disasters."

"We should start a club," I suggested.

"The Socially Awkward Padel Society?" Jordan offered. "I'm in."

As we walked onto the court together, I realized something: pyramids only look stable from far away. Up close, everyone's just trying not to trip. And sometimes, having spinach stuck in your teeth is exactly the icebreaker you need.
