Spinach Stains and Second Chances
Maya hovered over the blender like it was a chemistry set, which in a way, it was. The health influencer she'd been binge-watching swore this papaya-spinach combo was a literal game-changer for skin, and if there was one thing fifteen-year-old Maya needed before Jake's party tonight, it was game-changing skin.
"You're being extra," her older brother called from the couch.
"You're literally watching Netflix while I'm over here trying to glow up."
She dumped in the papaya—sunset orange and somehow slimy in a way she hadn't anticipated. Then a massive handful of spinach. The blender roared to life, screaming like a dying robot, and Maya watched in horror as the mixture turned into something resembling nuclear waste.
"Whatever," she muttered, pouring it into a mason jar because that's what the influencers did. "It's practically a smoothie at this point."
That's when Barnaby chose his moment.
Her family's golden retriever, possessed by what she could only describe as demonic energy when food was involved, launched himself off the couch. The collision was inevitable. Maya went down hard. The mason jar flew.
Green slime everywhere.
Her white shirt. The carpet. Barnaby's guilty face as he enthusiastically licked papaya-spinach disaster from his paws.
"NO! BAD DOG!"
But it was too late. She looked like she'd been attacked by a swamp creature. Her phone buzzed—Jake: party starts in 20, you coming?
Maya stared at herself in the hallway mirror. Green streaks like war paint across her forehead. A blotch right on the nose she'd spent twenty minutes concealing earlier.
She started crying, which made it worse—makeup running everywhere, mixing with the spinach.
Then she caught her own eye in the reflection and started laughing. Because what was she even doing? Making toxic sludge smoothies to impress some guy who'd probably be too busy with his friends to notice her anyway? Trying to be someone she wasn't?
"You know what," she said to Barnaby, who was now wearing a spinach mustache, "screw it."
She wiped her face with a towel, threw on a hoodie, and showed up to Jake's with her hair in a messy bun and a stubborn green smudge on her chin that refused to wash off.
Jake took one look at her and grinned. "Nice look. Very... environmentally conscious?"
"My dog tried to assassinate me with a smoothie," she said, and somehow that became the whole story of the night. They sat on his porch steps while she told him the whole ridiculous sequence, and he laughed so hard at her impression of Barnaby that he snorted soda out his nose.
Maya didn't have glowing skin. She had spinach stains. But Jake texted her the next day anyway.
