Spinach Smoothie Summer

Maya's phone buzzed with another notification—her third viral TikTok this week. She stared at her iPhone screen, watching her younger self awkwardly dance in what now seemed like another lifetime. That was before the glow-up, before her hair transformation, before she became someone else entirely.

"You need to eat," her mom said, sliding a green sludge across the kitchen counter. "It's got spinach, vitamin C, and literally everything you're missing."

Maya wrinkled her nose. The smoothie looked like something that came out of a swamp. "I'm good."

"You're not good, Maya. You're surviving on iced coffee and anxiety."

Her dog Buster chose that moment to bolt through the doggy door, barking like maniac at something in the backyard. Maya chased him out, still holding her phone, still recording everything for her story.

That's when she saw it.

A bear. An actual freaking bear, standing on its hind legs near the compost bin, looking confused and magnificent and terrifying all at once.

Maya screamed. Her phone slipped from her fingers, cracking against a rock. The bear startled, scrambled over the fence, and vanished into the woods behind their house.

Her heart hammered against her ribs. Buster cowered behind her legs, whimpering. And for the first time in months, Maya wasn't thinking about filters or engagement rates or whether her caption was witty enough.

She was just alive. Scared, messy, completely uncurated alive.

Her mom rushed out, phone in hand. "Did you see—"

"The bear," Maya finished, laughing. "I did. I dropped my phone. It's probably dead."

"Maybe that's not the worst thing," her mom said gently.

Maya looked at the cracked screen, then at the smoothie she'd abandoned. She took a sip. It tasted like grass and redemption.

"Actually," she said, "this isn't that bad."

Behind them, Buster barked at empty space, convinced he'd saved them both. Maybe he had. Maya drank her spinach smoothie and didn't check her notifications once.
