Spinach Smoothie Incident

Maya's life was officially over. At least, that's what it felt like when she heard the laughter rippling through the cafeteria. The smell of burnt toast still lingered on her clothes from the kitchen incident earlier, but that wasn't even the worst part.

The worst part was currently splashing in the hallway fountain.

Three days earlier, Maya had been running late for first period when she spotted Liam—her crush since seventh grade—leaning against his locker, looking unfairly good in his varsity jacket. He'd actually smiled at her and said, "Hey Maya, nice kicks." Her brain had short-circuited, and she'd somehow agreed to watch his pets while his family visited his grandma for the weekend.

"Just feed the cat and make sure the goldfish doesn't die," he'd said, pressing his house key into her palm. "You're literally a lifesaver."

Now she stood watching said goldfish floating sideways in the decorative fountain by the main office, while said cat—a calico chaos demon named Pickles—was currently perched on top of the trophy case, knocking down the third-place tennis ribbon from 2019.

"Maya, what is happening?" her best friend Sophie appeared beside her, eyes wide.

"I don't want to talk about it," Maya whispered, but Pickles chose that moment to yowl dramatically and leap onto the principal's perfectly coiffed head.

The incident had started innocently enough. Maya had brought Liam's pets to school because her little brother had threatened to "accidentally" let Pickles outside again, and she couldn't trust him. She'd planned to keep them in her locker during study hall, but Pickles had other plans— bursting from her carrier and triggering a chaotic chase through the science wing, water bottle somehow exploding all over her biology worksheet, and now this.

"You brought a CAT to SCHOOL?" Sophie was trying not to laugh and failing miserably.

"I had no choice!" Maya protested. "And somehow the goldfish bowl got involved, and—"

"Is that... spinach?" Sophie pointed to Maya's backpack, where green sludge was seeping through the fabric.

"I made Liam a smoothie as a thank-you gift," Maya groaned. "For when he gets back."

The principal had finally wrestled Pickles into his office, and Maya was trying to figure out how to fish a goldfish from a fountain without making things worse when she heard footsteps behind her.

"Please tell me that's my fish," Liam's voice.

Maya turned slowly. He was standing there, somehow back early, with his family in tow. And he was grinning. Not the polite smile from the hallway—a real, genuine, almostadmiring grin.

"My mom decided grandma's house smelled like mothballs," he explained, reaching down to scoop the goldfish from the fountain. "So we came back early. And wow." He looked at the spinach dripping from her bag, the calico cat currently meowing from the principal's office, the gathering crowd of students taking videos. "Maya, this is honestly the most epic thing anyone has ever done for me."

"It was an accident," she mumbled, face burning.

"No, it's perfect." He handed her the goldfish bowl. "You literally went chaotic to take care of my pets. That's... actually really cool." His mom appeared beside him, looking amused rather than angry. "We'll take these troublemakers back. Maya, would you like to join us for dinner? My mom's making spinach lasagna."

"Is the cat invited?" the principal called from his doorway.

As Maya walked beside Liam toward the parking lot, cat carrier in one hand, goldfish in the other, spinach still dripping from her backpack, she caught Sophie's eye across the hall. Sophie gave her a thumbs-up.

Maybe, just maybe, Maya's life wasn't over. Maybe it was just getting started.
