Spinach Smile Lightning Strike
Maya's orange converse squeaked against the cafeteria linoleum as she made her way to the lunch table, her heart doing that weird fluttery thing it always did when Tyler was within a fifty-foot radius. She'd spent forty-five minutes on her hair that morning, her curls cooperating for once in her life.
"Hey guys," she said, sliding into her seat with what she hoped passed for effortless cool.
"Maya, your braces," Kiana whispered dramatically, her eyes wide. "There's—"
A piece of spinach. From her lunch salad. Stuck right in the middle of her teeth.
Maya's face burned hotter than the time she'd accidentally texted her crush "I love your butt" instead of "I love your band." She could feel Tyler watching her from his table across the room, and suddenly everything narrowed down to this: the most embarrassing moment of her entire eighth-grade existence, happening in slow motion like some cosmic joke.
But then lightning struck—literally. The cafeteria lights flickered violently, and thunder cracked so loudly that half the students jumped. In the chaos, Maya caught Tyler's eye. He wasn't laughing. He was grinning. And then, unmistakably, he pointed to his own teeth, where a piece of parsley was stuck in his braces.
They shared a moment across the crowded cafeteria, both ridiculous, both flawed, both lightning-strike awkward together.
Maya started laughing. Like, actually laughing, not fake polite laughing. And when she finally got the spinach out (thanks to Kiana's compact mirror), she caught Tyler's eye again and shrugged.
He gave her a thumbs-up.
Maybe perfection was overrated anyway. Maybe the lightning-flash moment of being human together was better than perfectly curated Instagram posts. Maya took another bite of her salad, spinach and all, and decided this might just be her best lunch ever.
