Spinach Smile Fox Chase
Maya's hair rebelled against physics that morning. The frizz defied three products and her mom's expensive straightener, exploding into a chaotic brown halo around her head. Perfect. First day at sophomore year, and she looked like she'd stuck her finger in an electrical socket.
At lunch, the universe conspired further. The cafeteria's wilted spinach salad had looked like a safe choice—healthy, unassuming, impossible to screw up. She'd been chewing carefully, minding her own business, when THE Fox walked by.
Jordan. The fox. The impossibly gorgeous junior with the smile that made knees forget their job. The one everyone whispered about in the bathroom between classes.
"Hey, nice hair," Jordan said, stopping at her table.
Maya's brain short-circuited. Was he mocking her? Or did he actually like the frizz explosion? She opened her mouth to respond—cool, casual, effortless—and felt the silent horror of spinach wedged between her front teeth.
"I, um, thanks," she managed, while internally screaming.
"You're Maya, right? From Mr. Harrison's English class last year?"
"Yeah! That's me." She flashed what she hoped was a charming smile, completely forgetting the spinach situation.
Jordan's eyes flickered to her teeth, then back up. A microscopic pause. Then—miraculously—he grinned. "Cool. Anyway, see you around."
He walked away. Maya died inside.
Without thinking, she grabbed her backpack and bolted from the cafeteria, running past confused freshmen, through the hallway, out the side door near the track field. The cool air hit her burning face.
"Maya!"
She spun around. Jordan stood there, breathless. He'd followed her.
"You... you had something in your teeth," he said, his face turning pink. "I should've told you. That was weird of me."
"Spinach?" she whispered.
"Spinach."
They stared at each other. Then Jordan started laughing—this genuine, awkward, beautiful sound—and Maya couldn't help it. She laughed too.
"My hair's a disaster too," she admitted.
"I know," Jordan said. "That's kind of why I noticed you."
Maya's heart did something complicated and wonderful. The spinach still happened. The hair was still chaos. But somehow, the most humiliating day of her life had turned into something else entirely.
