Spinach Smile at the Net

Maya's palms were sweating — like, actually dripping — as she gripped the padel racquet. Tryouts for the varsity team, and somehow she'd convinced herself she belonged here. The court echoed with the sharp *thwack* of balls hitting walls, mixed with seniors' laughter that felt miles away from her nervous energy.

"You're up, new girl," said Chloe, the team captain, who'd somehow already graduated to crop tops and coffee dates while Maya was still figuring out how to exist.

The ball came fast. Maya swung. A perfect shot — until her foot caught the edge of the court. She went down hard, her palm slapping the concrete in a way that made everyone wince.

But the real disaster? The spinach stuck in her teeth from lunch. She'd spent twenty minutes in the bathroom mirror trying to get it out, clearly failed, and now half the team was trying not to laugh.

"You good?" A guy from the boys' practice court wandered over. Leo, with his stupid perfect hair and way too much confidence.

Maya's face burned. "Yeah. Just admiring the floor."

Lightning flashed outside the gym windows. A storm rolling in, matching the complete disaster of her social life.

"You've got something in your—" Leo pointed at his own teeth.

Of course. The spinach. The actual worst.

But then he laughed, not mean. Like, actually amused. "I once fell off the stage at the spring showcase. In front of everyone."

Maya blinked. "Seriously?"

"Tripped over my own feet. My solo ended with me face-planting. The video's still on someone's TikTok." He shrugged. "Nobody remembers that part anymore. They remember I got back up and finished."

He extended a hand. Maya took it, her palm still stinging but something else warming in her chest. Maybe this wasn't a complete disaster. Maybe it was the start of something.

"You play padel?" she asked, trying to sound casual.

"Since third grade. My parents are obsessed." He gestured to the empty court. "Want to practice before storm hits?"

Maya wiped her mouth, checked her reflection in the gym door's glass. Clean teeth, finally. "Only if you don't mind losing."

Leo's grin answered everything. The thunder rattled the gym windows, but Maya couldn't hear it over the sound of her own heartbeat, loud and alive and maybe, just maybe, ready for whatever came next.
