Spinach Smile and Lightning Strikes

spinachbaseballlightning

The spinach was stuck. Maya could feel it wedged between her front teeth, a leafy green flag of social suicide. She'd only eaten the stupid salad because her mom had packed it, claiming it would help her "think faster" during finals week. Now here she was, standing in front of Tyler at the baseball game, her smile sabotaged by vegetation.

"You coming to Jake's party tonight?" Tyler asked, leaning against the bleacher railing like he owned the place.

Maya's brain short-circuited. Tyler. The guy she'd had a crush on since seventh grade was talking to her, and she had spinach in her teeth. This was the stuff of nightmares, the kind of humiliation that lived forever in group chat lore.

"Uh, maybe?" she managed, keeping her lips pressed together in what she hoped passed for a mysterious closed-mouth smile.

"Cool." He tilted his baseball cap backward. "We're doing a thing behind the dugout if you wanna..."

CRACK. The sky went purple-white. Lightning struck the scoreboard, and suddenly every bulb on the field exploded like fireworks. The crowd screamed. Someone's nachos went flying. In that split second of chaos, Maya saw Tyler flinch, really flinch, and she realized—he was just as nervous as she was.

The game got called. Everyone scattered to their cars or the concession stand for cover. But Maya stood there frozen, watching Tyler sprint toward the parking lot. She'd spent so long trying to be perfect around him, saying the right things, wearing the right clothes, avoiding anything that could make her look weird. But in that flash of lightning, she'd seen something real.

She pulled out her phone, opened her camera, and yep—there it was. A tiny piece of spinach, fluorescent against her braces. But you know what? It was funny. It was human.

"Hey!" she called out, sprinting after him through the drizzle. "Tyler!"

He turned around, rain plastering his hair to his forehead.

"I had spinach in my teeth that whole time," she said, laughing. "Like, a genuinely impressive amount."

Tyler stared at her for a second, then cracked up. "No way. I thought you were just being all mysterious and intense."

"Nope. Just terrified of embarrassment."

"Well," he said, grinning, "good thing lightning struck before I could say anything else potentially embarrassing." He paused. "So... Jake's party? You still coming?"

Maya smiled, spinach-free and anxiety-free for the first time all night. "Yeah. Yeah, I am."

Sometimes it takes getting hit by lightning—literally—to realize nobody's actually keeping score except you.
