Spinach Smile

Maya's life was basically a compilation of awkward moments, but today took the cake. She'd been clandestinely observing Tyler from behind her history textbook for three weeks now—a low-level spy operation she'd dubbed "Operation Crush." Being fifteen and crushing on the soccer captain was already tragic enough without adding amateur espionage to the mix.

The cafeteria chaos reached peak volume when Maya finally worked up the courage to approach Tyler's table. She'd mentally rehearsed this moment approximately 847 times in her bedroom mirror. But apparently, spinach smoothies were her enemy, because as she confidently strode toward him, someone yelled "BEAR DOWN!" and the whole cafeteria erupted in their school's signature cheer.

Startled, Maya tripped. Her tray flew. Spinach smoothie splashed everywhere—including down the front of Tyler's pristine white jersey.

Time froze. The entire cafeteria went silent. Tyler wiped bright green slime from his chest and looked at her, and Maya wanted to evaporate right there. Instead of waiting for humiliation's complete arrival, she did what any rational person would do: she bolted.

Running down the hallway, flip-flops slapping against the linoleum, Maya didn't stop until she reached the girls' bathroom. Her best friend Jen found her five minutes later, mascara-smudged and hyperventilating in a stall.

"You're being dramatic," Jen said, passing tissues under the door. "Tyler actually thinks it's hilarious. He was just laughing about it with his friends."

"He's laughing AT me, not WITH me. There's a difference."

"No, seriously. He said, and I quote, 'That girl has mad confidence.' He's impressed by your commitment to that smoothie flight."

Maya emerged from the stall, sniffling. "You're making this up."

"I'm not. But here's the thing—tomorrow, you gotta own it. Walk up to him, spinach stains and all, and say 'At least I keep things interesting.' That's the kind of energy he'll remember."

The next day, Maya's hands literally shook as she approached Tyler after practice. But Jen was right—Tyler grinned when he saw her.

"Smoothie girl," he said. "You've got some serious game."

"Only when I'm running on pure adrenaline and disaster," Maya replied, and they both laughed.

Sometimes the most embarrassing moments become the best stories. Maya would never live down the Great Spinach Incident of sophomore year, but somehow, that was exactly the point.
