Spinach Smile

Maya's worst nightmare happened in slow motion, right at the popular table during fourth period lunch.

She'd spent weeks working up the courage to sit near Jordan, whose laugh echoed through the cafeteria like her favorite song on repeat. This was it—her chance to finally exist in his orbit instead of just watching from three tables away.

"So, Maya," Jordan said, actually looking at her. "You coming to Sarah's party Friday?"

Her heart did that nervous flutter thing. "Yeah, probably. I think—"

Then her cat, who'd somehow escaped her house that morning (her brother was dead meat), chose that exact moment to sprint past the cafeteria windows. Orange fur blazing like a comet. Maya gasped, her elbow knocked into her tray, and her spinach salad went everywhere—mostly on her new white hoodie.

The table went silent. Jordan blinked. Maya felt her face burning like she'd swallowed hot lava.

"Is that... a CAT?" someone asked.

"Oh my god, that's Mrs. Chen's cat from down the street!" Jordan burst out laughing. "That thing is a legend—it steals everyone's delivery packages."

Maya started laughing too, even though she wanted to teleport home and never return. The spinach on her shirt looked like tiny green explosions. Her life was officially over.

But then Jordan slid closer. "Here, I got this." He handed her some napkins. "My little brother did this last week with spaghetti sauce. His shirt's still ruined."

Their hands brushed. Maya's stomach did that thing where it felt like she was free-falling.

"So," Jordan said, his voice dropping like he was sharing a secret. "About Friday... you want to come with me? Like, together?"

Maya looked at the spinach disaster on her shirt, at the orange cat still visible through the window perched on a tree branch, and back at Jordan whose smile was making her forget how to breathe.

"Yeah," she said, feeling like she could float away. "I'd like that."

Her hoodie was ruined, her cat was probably terrorizing the neighborhood, and she had spinach in her teeth—she checked later—but somehow, this was still the best lunch of her entire life.
