Spinach Sabotage Protocol
I stood frozen in Jake's kitchen, clutching a Tupperware of spinach artichoke dip like it was contraband. My aunt made me bring it — "something sophisticated," she'd said — but what 17-year-old shows up to a house party with dip? I was already fighting imposter syndrome in my ripped Converse and oversized hoodie while everyone else looked like they stepped out of a TikTok makeover.
Then I saw it: Jake's cat, a fluffy orange demon named Mango, perched on top of the entertainment center, batting at the HDMI cable like it was a toy. Nobody else noticed. They were all in the living room, playing some drinking game with solo cups and laughing too loud. I watched in slow motion as Mango's claws caught on the cable, sending the entire setup crashing down.
The cable snapped taut, pulling Jake's brand-new gaming console off the shelf. It hit the floor with a sickening crunch that cut through the music like a gunshot.
Everything stopped. Every head turned toward me like I'd triggered some social apocalypse.
"Did you... did your cat just murder my PS5?" Jake asked, staring at the wreckage.
My brain went into fight-or-flight mode, but apparently flight mode was broken. Instead, I dropped the spinach dip. It shattered across the tile, green chunks splattering everywhere like some kind of culinary crime scene.
"I was... I was running to save it," I heard myself say, which made absolutely no sense. "From the cat."
Jake looked at me. Then at his console. Then at the spinach explosion.
And then he started laughing. Not mean laughing — like, actually laughing.
"Bro," he said, wiping his eyes. "You literally brought dip to a console destruction. This is iconic."
Someone took a photo. My face, the spinach disaster, the dead console behind me. By midnight, it was all over school Snapchat with the caption "Spinach Sabotage Protocol." I woke up to fifty new follower requests and three different people asking if I'd "sabotage" their next party.
I still cringe thinking about it. But somehow, by completely humiliating myself in front of Jake's entire friend group, I accidentally became memorable. Mango even let me pet him at the next party. Small wins, I guess.
