Spinach & Lightning Strikes

bulllightningspinach

Maya's summer was turning out to be a total flop—until the county fair happened. Now she was standing in front of the mechanical bull, her heart doing that thing where it felt like it might actually escape her chest.

"You got this, Maya!" her best friend Chloe yelled, filming everything for TikTok, obviously. Meanwhile, Lucas—the cute guy from her biology class who'd actually smiled at her twice this week—was watching. No pressure.

The spinach incident at lunch yesterday was still haunting her. She'd gotten a massive piece stuck in her teeth during what should've been a normal conversation with Lucas. He'd been too nice to say anything, but she'd seen his microscopic cringe. Hence the mechanical bull situation. If she could ride this thing, maybe she could redeem herself from spinach girl to fearless girl.

The operator, some guy with a beard that'd seen better decades, smirked. "Three bucks, three seconds. Most these kids don't make it past one."

Maya climbed on, the vinyl seat warm from endless riders. She gripped the handle with everything she had.

"GO!" someone screamed.

The bull jerked forward, then back, then sideways all at once. Maya's body turned into liquid chaos. Her hair whipped around like she was stuck in a wind tunnel. Somewhere between hanging on for dear life and absolutely eating it, she caught Lucas's eye. He wasn't cringing. He was... impressed?

The bull spun harder. Maya's grip slipped. She went flying—gracefully, she hoped—and landed in the sawdust, her skirt somehow still decent.

"THREE POINT SEVEN SECONDS!" the operator announced. "New record for today!"

Lucas extended a hand to help her up. "That was actually kinda sick."

Maya's face flushed, but this time not from embarrassment. The afternoon sun caught his eyes—hazel, she realized now—and something about the moment felt like lightning, electric and impossible to ignore.

"Your turn," she said, maybe a little too boldly.

He laughed. "Absolutely not. I'd die in like, one second."

They ended up splitting an order of cheese fries afterward, spinach-free, and talked about nothing and everything. Maya's summer might not be a flop after all.
