Spinach in Your Smile

Maya's first day at Northwood High felt like walking into a live TikTok feed she hadn't been invited to join. The cafeteria was a maze of social circles – the varsity jacket crew, the art kids with their anime sketches, the theater people already rehearsing for a fall play that was months away. She clutched her tray like a lifeline, scanning for somewhere to sit.

Her mom had packed her usual lunch: a papaya she'd sliced that morning, looking suspiciously like something from a health influencer's feed. Maya loved papaya, but suddenly it felt too exotic, too attention-grabbing. Like she was trying too hard to be different before she'd even established her regular.

"You're Maya, right?"

She jumped, nearly upending her papaya. A guy with dark curly hair and a mischievous grin slid into the seat across from her. Fox. Everyone called him that – something about being clever and slippery, never quite pinned down to one social group.

"Yeah," she managed. "How'd you know?"

"I have my ways." His eyes danced. "Also, I saw your schedule earlier. You're in AP Bio with me. I saved you a seat."

Maya felt her face heat up. She'd been so freaked out about finding classrooms she hadn't noticed anyone being nice. Fox was... unexpectedly solid. Not stuck-up like some popular kids, not desperate like the ones trying too hard. Just comfortable in his skin.

"Want some?" She pushed the papaya toward him, nerves making her generous. "My mom cut it fresh this morning."

Fox's eyebrows shot up. "You actually like papaya? Bold choice." He took a piece, popping it into his mouth. "Okay, that's actually good. I respect it."

They talked through lunch – AP Bio expectations, teachers to avoid, the cursed third-floor bathrooms. Maya felt herself relaxing, the knot in her chest loosening. Maybe Northwood wouldn't be so bad after all.

The bell rang. Fox stood, grabbing his backpack. "Hey, you got something in your teeth," he said casually. "Spinach, maybe? From earlier?"

Maya's stomach dropped. She'd eaten a spinach salad at breakfast – a rushed attempt at being healthy before the first day jitters hit. How long had it been there? During her whole conversation with Fox?

He was already walking away, not even waiting for her embarrassed thanks. But she caught his smirk as he glanced back, and something in his expression told her he'd noticed way earlier and hadn't said anything because he didn't want to make it awkward.

Fox, indeed. Clever and slippery and maybe – just maybe – worth knowing.

Maya wiped the spinach from her teeth, gathered her papaya, and headed to fourth period feeling something she hadn't expected: maybe, just maybe, she was going to be okay here.
