Spinach in the Storm

Maya's vintage cowboy hat was her armor. She'd bought it at a thrift store last summer, back when she thought adopting a whole new aesthetic would magically transform her from invisible to unforgettable at Northwood High. Spoiler: it hadn't worked. But old habits died hard, and she still wore it every time she needed an extra dose of confidence.

Like today, when she was finally going to talk to him.

Julian had moved to their school in October, all mysterious artistic energy and Paint-stained fingers. He sat alone at lunch sometimes, sketching in a leather-bound notebook that Maya was desperate to see inside of. They'd made eye contact exactly three times in the hallway, and Maya had spent way too much time analyzing what each look meant.

Now she was leaning against the brick wall outside the cafeteria, waiting for him to emerge, practicing her opening line in her head. Something casual. Something cool. Not 'I've been watching you like a creep for three months.'

The sky chose that moment to crack open. A massive lightning bolt streaked across the darkening clouds, followed immediately by thunder that rattled the windows. Students scattered, screaming and laughing, running for cover as rain began to pour.

Everyone except Julian.

He stood there in the downpour, tilting his head back, arms spread wide like he was welcoming it. His white T-shirt became instantly transparent. He looked ridiculous and perfect and completely unhinged, and Maya felt something shift in her chest, something electric that had nothing to do with the storm.

She ran out to join him, hat clamped to her head.

'You're gonna get sick!' she shouted over the rain.

He turned to her, grinning, water streaming down his face. 'Maybe that's the point!'

And then she was grinning too, and they were both standing there in the middle of the school courtyard, getting absolutely drenched, and it was the most free she'd felt in years.

They ended up at her house afterward, soaked to the bone, her mom fussing over them with towels and hot chocolate. They sat on the back porch watching the storm, talking about everything and nothing until the sun came out. Julian told her he moved around a lot, that he never stayed anywhere long enough to make real friends. Maya told him about her hat collection, about how she kept reinventing herself hoping something would stick.

'You don't need the hat,' he said, looking at her with those intense eyes. 'You're already interesting enough.'

Maya's mom brought them grilled cheese sandwiches for dinner, and as Maya took her first bite, Julian started laughing. She froze.

'What?'

'You have...' He gestured to his own teeth. 'Spinach. From the sandwich. Which you just took one bite of.'

Her face burned. She grabbed a napkin, scrubbing at her teeth while he laughed harder, not mean laughter but real laughter, like they were already friends who did this all the time.

'So much for my mysterious cool girl vibe,' she mumbled.

'Maya?' He said her name for the first time. 'I like this version better.'

Outside, the storm had passed, leaving everything washed clean and new. Maya took off her hat and set it on the porch railing. Something told her she wouldn't be needing it as much anymore.
