Spinach in the Spotlight

Maya's hair refused to cooperate that night. She'd spent forty-five minutes trying to tame the frizz, but humidity had other plans. Standing in Jordan's crowded living room, she felt like a lightning rod for social anxiety—every eye that swept her way sent electricity through her chest.

The house party was everything she dreaded: bass-heavy music, people shouting over each other, and the constant pressure to look like she belonged. She clutched her solo cup like a lifeline.

"Yo, you good?" Caleb appeared beside her, his trademark messy curls somehow working for him. "You look like you're about to bolt."

Maya forced a laugh. "I'm chill. Just... processing the vibe."

"Dog, you're not chill." Caleb nudged her. "You're overthinking everything as usual."

He was right. Maya had spent the entire week analyzing every interaction with Jordan, trying to figure out if their study sessions meant something more or if she was reading into nothing. The uncertainty gnawed at her.

Then she saw him across the room—Jordan, laughing with his friends, that smile that made her stomach do gymnastics. But something caught her eye. A large, embarrassing piece of spinach wedged between his front teeth.

Her moment. The universe practically handed it to her on a silver platter. She could play it cool, be the hero, tell him subtly before anyone else noticed. This was her chance to finally make a move instead of standing on the sidelines.

But then Taylor swooped in. Taylor, with her perfect hair and effortless confidence, leaned in and whispered something in Jordan's ear. He laughed, touched his mouth, then whispered something back.

They'd shared a moment. A cable of understanding stretched between them, and Maya wasn't plugged in.

"You missed your shot," Caleb said softly beside her. "Next time, don't wait for the perfect moment. There's no such thing."

Maya's phone buzzed—her mom, probably wondering where she was. But instead of answering, she typed out a text to Jordan first. Nothing flirty, nothing dramatic. Just: Spinach emergency. Check your teeth lol.

His reply came instantly: YOU'RE A LIFESAVER

She watched him laugh, watched him look around the room until their eyes met. And in that second, something shifted. Maybe she hadn't missed anything after all.
