Spinach in the Spotlight

Maya's reflection stared back from her phone screen—she'd dyed her hair orange yesterday. A rebel move, her first act of defiance against her mom's "natural only" rule. Tonight, the house party felt like walking into a lion's den.

The kitchen buzzed with upperclassmen. Someone had put on that old zombie show everyone streamed, and the TV flashed with undead chaos. Maya grabbed a solo cup, her hands shaking. This was it. Finally, at seventeen, she was crashing Jake Miller's party.

"Hey, orange hair," called a voice. Jake himself. He ambled over, all varsity jacket and easy confidence. "Digging the vibe."

Maya choked on her punch. Direct hit. "Thanks! I, um—"

But wait. Something felt wrong. Her tongue grazed her front teeth. That massive chunk of spinach from dinner, still lodged there like a green catastrophe.

No. No no no.

She ducked toward the bathroom, heart hammering like thunder in her ears. Outside, the sky lit up—actual lightning cracked across the dark windows. The storm was moving in fast.

"Whoa, wild night," Jake appeared behind her in the hallway mirror. "You okay?"

She stared at her reflection. The spinach. The ridiculous orange hair. The way she was overthinking everything. Suddenly, she started laughing. She couldn't help it. The absurdity of it all.

"Actually," she met his eyes in the mirror, "I have spinach in my teeth. Like, embarrassingly huge. And I literally just dyed my hair yesterday without telling my parents, and now I'm terrified to go home."

Jake blinked. Then he grinned. "Dude. Last week? I walked around school with my fly down for three periods. Three."

Maya laughed harder. "No way."

"Straight up bull, but true." He leaned against the doorframe. "Parents gonna freak about the hair?"

"Probably ground me till I'm thirty."

"Worth it though, right?"

Maya studied her reflection again. The orange hair, the spinach finally picked away, the smile that was actually, genuinely hers for the first time in months.

"Yeah," she said. "Totally worth it."
