Spinach in the Deep End

The pool party at Tyler's house was supposed to be my moment. You know, the one where you finally stop being the quiet kid who reads during lunch and actually, like, exist. But instead, here I was, hovering by the snack table, pretending to be fascinated by a bowl of spinach dip while everyone else splashed in the pool like they were in a music video.

"Hey, Maya!" Sarah called from the deep end. She was the kind of pretty that made you feel like you were wearing your clothes wrong. "Get in here! The water's perfect!"

I clutched my solo cup tighter. "Um, maybe in a bit!"

Behind me, Tyler's dog—a chaos creature named Nugget who'd already eaten three abandoned hot dogs—decided this was his moment to shine. He barreled past me, straight toward the bowl of spinach dip like it was his personal pyramid of triumph. The bowl went flying. Spinach erupted everywhere. All over my white dress.

The pool went silent. Everyone staring. I wanted to dissolve into the concrete.

But then this happened: Tyler's little brother Marcus started laughing. Not mean laughing, but like, genuine losing-it laughing. And then Sarah was laughing too, and suddenly the whole pool was cracking up, and somehow I wasn't the awkward girl with spinach on her dress anymore. I was the girl who survived the Nugget Incident.

"You good?" Tyler swam over, grinning. "That was legendary."

I looked down at my dress, the green smear like a battle scar. "Yeah," I said, and actually jumped into the pool, dress and all. "I'm good."

Later, wrapped in a cable-knit sweater from Tyler's lost-and-found, I sat on the deck with my legs in the water, finally part of the group instead of watching from the edge. Sometimes the worst moments aren't the end of the world. Sometimes they're just the beginning of you actually showing up.
