Spinach in My Serve

Maya's curls had a personality of their own, exploding from her head in a frizzy halo that refused to be tamed. At fourteen, she'd already tried every product promising sleek, straight hair—the kind the popular girls at Lakeside Prep had. The kind that fell in perfect waves while hers formed its own gravitational pull.

"You should try padel," Jordan had said at lunch, sliding into the seat across from her. "The team needs players, and honestly? You've got that athletic vibe."

Maya had choked on her spinach wrap. "Paddle? Like canoeing?"

"No, padel. It's like tennis but cooler." Jordan's blue eyes actually sparkled. How did eyes do that? "Come to open tryouts tomorrow."

That night, Maya stared in the mirror, attempting to flatten her hair with a brush that surrendered quickly. Her grandmother's voice echoed in her head: *"Spinach makes you strong, mija. Eat it like a warrior preparing for battle."*

Maybe strength was what she needed.

At tryouts, Coach Rivera handed her a racquet. "Ever play?"

"Never." Maya's voice squeaked.

"Natural athlete form. Let's see what you've got."

The first serve sailed wide. Her hair escaped its ponytail, whipping across her face. Someone giggled—Chelsea, whose hair remained impossibly motionless in a high bun.

"Focus, Maya," Jordan called from the sidelines. "You've got this."

She adjusted her grip. Remembered those spinach smoothies her abuela made. *Warrior preparing for battle.*

The ball came at her, and Maya stopped thinking. Her body moved on instinct—drop shot, volley, smash. She returned everything, her curls bouncing wildly, unleashed and electric. When she finally missed, sweating and breathless, everyone was staring.

"You made the team," Jordan said, grinning. "That spin on your backhand? Insane."

Chelsea actually nodded. "Not bad, new girl."

Later, Maya caught her reflection in the gym mirrors—wild hair, sweat-stained face, spinach still stuck in her teeth from lunch. She should've felt embarrassed. Instead, she grinned.

"Your hair's pretty cool," Jordan said quietly beside her. "It has, like, zero chill. But in a good way."

Maya laughed, real and loud. "Yeah. Zero chill."

Some things weren't meant to be tamed. And maybe that was okay.
