Spinach Dip Disaster
Maya stood at the edge of the pool party like she'd just materialized there from another dimension. Which, honestly, would've been less awkward than actually showing up in her denim shorts while everyone else was in swimsuits. She clutched her phone like a lifeline, the cracked screen somehow grounding her in the chaos of Jake's backyard splendor.
The pool shimmered with that weird blue-green water that always looked slightly artificial, like someone had dyed it to match the Instagram aesthetic. Laughter erupted from the deep end where a bunch of popular kids were doing something that looked cool but probably wasn't. Maya took a breath and made her way toward the snack table, because food had never betrayed her. Until today.
"Maya! You made it!" Jake's voice carried across the patio, and suddenly he was there, dripping wet and annoyingly perfect. "I made spinach dip. You have to try it."
Spinach. Dip. The two words together should've been her first clue. But Jake was smiling at her like she actually mattered, so she grabbed a chip and dove in.
It tasted like—well, spinach. But she swallowed, because that's what you did when your crush just served you green glop. "It's... interesting?" she managed, before disaster struck.
Some freshman racing toward the pool cannonballed into the table, and the spinach dip bowl went flying. Green goo splattered everywhere—mostly on Jake's older sister, who had apparently been livestreaming the whole party.
"MY CABLE!" she shrieked, pointing to the ethernet cable that had been ripped from her streaming setup. "I was literally about to hit 10k viewers!"
The backyard went silent. Jake's sister covered in spinach dip. A freshman looking guilty. And Maya, frozen with her half-chewed chip, suddenly responsible for destroying the social order of the entire party.
Then Jake started laughing. Not the mean kind, but the real kind—bent over, can't breathe, tears streaming. And then Maya did too, because sometimes the only thing you could do when life became a complete disaster was just surrender to it.
"Spinach dip was a terrible idea anyway," he gasped, finally composing himself. "Wanna go swim for real this time?"
And for the first time all afternoon, Maya didn't overthink it. She just kicked off her shoes and jumped in.
