Spinach Between the Bases
Maya's palm was sweating so much she could barely grip the bat. The baseball diamond stretched before her like a minefield, and somewhere in the bleachers, Jason was definitely watching.
"You got this, May!" yelled Chloe from third base.
Maya stepped up to the plate, heart hammering. This was it — freshman softball tryouts, and if she made the team, she'd officially stop being "that quiet girl" and become "that softball girl." A crucial distinction in the high school social pyramid.
Her first swing missed completely. Embarrassing.
Her second swing made contact — a solid hit that sent the ball soaring into center field. She sprinted toward first base, legs pumping, adrenaline flooding her veins. She was going to make it. She was going to be cool.
Then she heard it.
"Spinach!" someone yelled. "Maya, you've got spinach in your teeth!"
She kept running, face burning. She could feel everyone's eyes on her. When she slid into second base (safe, thankfully), she risked a glance toward the bleachers. Jason was laughing with his friends.
The social pyramid had just collapsed on top of her.
After tryouts, Maya found Chloe waiting by the dugout.
"That was actually clutch," Chloe said. "And don't worry about the spinach thing. I was the one who yelled it — better your friends tell you than let you walk around all day with green teeth, right?"
Maya's face was still hot, but something in her chest loosened. "You did that?"
"We're a team now." Chloe bumped her shoulder against Maya's. "Looking out for each other is literally the job."
Jason walked past on his way to the parking lot. "Nice hit," he said, barely glancing back.
Maya watched him go, then looked at Chloe, who was already scrolling through her phone and laughing at something.
Maybe the social pyramid wasn't as rigid as she'd thought. Maybe you could build your own structures — ones where friends had your back, even if it meant calling out your spinach in front of everyone.
She grinned, wiped her sweaty palm on her jersey, and followed her new teammate toward the locker room.
