Spinach Between Teeth
Maya stood in front of her bathroom mirror, applying lip gloss with trembling hands. Tonight was homecoming, her first high school dance, and her stomach was doing somersaults. Behind her, Mittens, her ancient cat with attitude, meowed from the counter like a tiny, furry judge.
"You think I'm nervous?" Maya whispered. "I'm not. Totally chill."
She was lying.
At the dance, the gym was transformed into a glittery wonderland. The Northwood High Bears had actually won their game earlier, so the energy was electric. Maya spotted Jake across the room—sophomore, varsity basketball, devastatingly cute—and her heart rate tripled.
She'd spent weeks mentally preparing for this moment. Instead, she spent twenty minutes hiding by the punch bowl, listening to Lucas tell her how he'd almost fought a bull at the state fair last summer.
"Dude, no you didn't," she interrupted. "That's such bull."
Lucas blinked. "Okay, maybe it was a really big cow."
Finally, Maya made her move. She smoothed her dress, walked up to Jake, and said, "Hey, great game tonight."
His face lit up. "Thanks! You're Maya, right? From biology?"
They talked for ten whole minutes. It was perfect, magical, everything she'd imagined—until Chelsea pulled her aside, eyes wide.
"Maya," she whispered. "You've had massive spinach in your teeth for like, half an hour."
The horror washed over her like ice water. She'd eaten the cafeteria's spinach-artichoke dip before coming. The spinach. THE SPINACH.
She'd just had the best conversation of her life with Jake while looking like she'd been eating lawn clippings.
"I have to go," Maya choked out.
She ran to the bathroom, locked herself in a stall, and cried for exactly ninety seconds. Then she pulled herself together. So what? So she'd embarrassed herself. It wasn't the end of the world.
When she emerged, Jake was waiting by the door.
"Hey," he said, rubbing the back of his neck. "I wasn't sure if you'd want to, but do you want to dance?"
"Even though I had spinach in my teeth?" Maya asked, mortified but oddly brave.
Jake grinned. "Honestly? I didn't even notice."
Maya laughed, and something inside her shifted. High school wasn't about being perfect. It was about being yourself—even when yourself had spinach in her teeth.
