Spinach at Midnight

spinachspypadel

The spinach recall had been Nathan's idea. Twenty thousand tons frozen and useless, and Elena's whistleblowing career finally over. She'd left the spy agency that morning — no debrief, no witness protection, just walked away.

Now she sat across from him at an outdoor café, padel racquets leaning against their chairs like sleeping weapons.

'They'll figure out it was you,' Nathan said, stirring his coffee. 'Corporate spies don't just retire.'

'They will when I threaten to leak everything about the botulism cover-up.' Elena stretched her legs, feeling the sweet ache from their match. 'Two hours of padel and I still can't beat you.'

Nathan smiled. 'You're getting closer.' He reached across the table, his fingers brushing hers. The gesture was intimate, terrifying. They'd been playing cat and mouse for six months — she investigating his company, him investigating her investigation. Somewhere along the way, the game had changed.

'My handler thinks you've turned me,' she said. 'Thinks I'm compromised.'

'Are you?'

'The spinach recall saved lives, Nathan.' She watched his face carefully. 'Your CEO knew about the contamination for three weeks.'

'And now he knows someone told me.' Nathan set down his cup. 'I forwarded your evidence to the FDA this morning.'

Elena stared at him. The corporate spy who'd sold his soul to the company had just destroyed it. For her.

'Why?'

'Because you kept coming back to play padel.' Nathan stood up, picking up his racquet. 'Because I'm tired of being who everyone thinks I am.' He looked back at her. 'Same time tomorrow?'

Elena watched him walk toward the courts. The agency would come for them both eventually. But for now, there was still the game. There was still the way he moved when he thought she wasn't watching, the way he let her win sometimes, the way spinach had caught in her hair during their match and he'd reached to pull it out, his fingers lingering against her cheek like a promise he couldn't keep.

Some betrayals, she realized, are worth the fall.
