Spinach and Sudden Clarity

Maya sat at her desk, picking at the spinach salad she'd forced herself to make that morning. The leaves were already wilting under the fluorescent lights, much like her spirit after three years of working for Marcus—the absolute bull of a CEO who'd made everyone's life miserable since the startup's Series B funding.

Outside, lightning forked across the darkening sky. The storm brewing outside felt juvenile compared to the one that had been gathering inside her chest for months.

"We need to pivot," Marcus had announced that morning, using his favorite word like a weapon. "The AI integration needs to happen by Q3, and I don't care about your team's bandwidth concerns."

Maya had stopped swimming regularly after the last promotion. The early mornings at the pool, where the only sound was her own rhythmic breathing and the water lapping against the tiles, had been her sanctuary. But work had consumed everything, including the predawn quiet she'd claimed for herself.

She'd started running instead—late at night, when the city was asleep and her thoughts couldn't catch up to her. But even that had become sporadic lately.

Now she picked up her phone and saw Liam's text: *Still on for dinner?*

Liam, the new product lead who smiled at her during meetings and whose eyes lingered just a second too long. Liam, who made her laugh without trying. Liam, who represented everything she'd convinced herself she couldn't have because she was too busy, too tired, too whatever.

The spinach tasted like obligation in her mouth.

Another flash of lightning illuminated her reflection in the window. She looked tired. She looked like someone running a marathon she'd never signed up for.

Maya stood up. She walked to Marcus's office, where he was probably already barking orders at someone else. Her heart pounded—not the anxious flutter of the past three years, but something else. Something stronger.

She was done swimming upstream. She was done running herself into the ground for someone who saw her as a resource to be expended.

She typed back to Liam: *Yes. 7. I have news.*

The storm broke just as she reached Marcus's door. This time, she was the lightning.
