Spinach and Social Survival
The kitchen was packed and I was vibrating with that special kind of panic that only high school house parties can induce. My palms were sweating so much I could practically water plants with them. Three Red Bulls deep and running on fumes from binging The Walking Dead until 3 AM had transformed me into a certified zombie, but there was no way I was missing Jax's party. Not when SHE was going to be there.
Chloe Rodriguez, the human equivalent of a perfectly curated Instagram feed. She was by the sliding glass door, laughing at something some guy in a varsity jacket said. I'd been psyching myself up to talk to her for weeks. This was it. The moment.
I made my approach, trying to look casual and not like my heart was doing jumping jacks. "Hey Chloe," I managed, leaning against the counter. "Physics test tomorrow? We should probably... study?"
She turned, and I saw it immediately: a chunk of spinach wedged between my front teeth. From dinner. Three hours ago. The spinach that had survived tooth brushing, flossing, and two Red Bulls.
Her friend stared. "Did you just try to flirt while looking like you ate a salad face-first?"
My soul left my body. I was dead. This was it. The social equivalent of death.
But then Chloe did something unexpected. She didn't laugh. She pulled out her phone, checked her reflection, then pointed at her own front teeth. "Last week? Piece of cilantro. Talked to my crush with it there for twenty minutes."
She shrugged. "Happens to everyone. You want to get some air?"
We ended up on the back porch, sitting on the cooler and talking about everything and nothing. No spinach, no sweaty palms, just conversation. The party raged inside, but out there, under the string lights, something shifted. I wasn't just zombie boy anymore. I was someone who could survive social humiliation and keep going.
When her ride pulled up two hours later, she waved. "Same time next week?"
I nodded, trying to play it cool. "Maybe. If I survive this spinach incident first."
She grinned. "You already did."
