Spinach and Second Chances
The green smoothie sat on the cafeteria table like a radioactive science experiment. Maya had spent forty-five minutes that morning blending spinach, banana, and almond milk because TikTok said it would clear her skin and make her glow.
Now, in third period lunch, she was regretting everything.
"What is that swamp water?" Derek asked, sliding onto the bench across from her. His varsity jacket was pristine, his smile easy. Maya felt her face heat up.
"It's... health," Maya mumbled, trying to slide the cup behind her back. But her elbow caught it, and suddenly the green sludge was splashing across Derek's white hoodie.
The cafeteria went silent.
"Oh my GOD," someone whispered. Maya wanted to dissolve. She grabbed a handful of napkins, her hands shaking, and started dabbing at the spinach-colored stain spreading across Derek's chest. It looked like he'd been attacked by a radioactive vegetable.
But then Derek started laughing. Not mean laughing—actual laughing.
"Okay, that's iconic," he said, wiping at the stain with his sleeve. "My mom's going to kill me, but honestly? This is way more interesting than another day of algebra."
Maya blinked. "You're not mad?"
"Dude, I'm literally wearing a salad," Derek grinned. "This is the most exciting thing that's happened since—"
"Since that fox got into the cafeteria last year?" his friend Jay called from down the table.
"EXACTLY. Remember how Mrs. Henderson stood on that chair?" Derek shook his head. "Anyway, you good? You look like you're about to pass out."
"I'm mortified," Maya admitted, something loosening in her chest.
"Don't be." Derek stood up, spinach stain prominently displayed. "You just made sure everyone notices me today. I've been trying to get Olivia to look my way for weeks—maybe she'll finally see me now that I'm wearing lunch."
That's when it clicked. Derek—the effortlessly popular Derek—was nervous too. About a girl. About being noticed.
After school, Maya walked her neighbor's dog through the park, Barnaby the golden retriever trotting happily beside her. Her phone buzzed: a follow request from @derekb3 and a DM: *deactivated the smoothie account. we good?*
She typed back: *we good. but maybe stick to gatorade*
His reply came instantly: *no promises. still trying to impress olivia. any advice?*
Maya smiled, Barnaby tugging at the leash. The boy everyone thought had it all figured out was asking her for advice. The girl who spilled spinach all over his shirt.
*be yourself,* she wrote. *it's working better than my smoothie plan.*
Maybe second chances tasted better than green smoothies anyway.
